Although there may be little in the way of art galleries to be found within Piura, the 18th-century Iglesia del Carmen (Sanchez Cerro) is on hand and home to the very interesting Museo de Arte Religioso (Religious Art Museum). This acclaimed art gallery resides on the north-easterly side of Piura, directly north of the Plaza de Armas and close to both the Hostal el Sol and the Hotel Peru

The Piura Religious Art Museum is easy to reach and lies off the Sanchez Cerro Avenue and the Jiron La Libertad, near to the Ignacio Merino square. As well as its popular gallery, the Iglesia del Carmen also contains a very precious chair, which was used by Pope John Paul II during his 1985 visit to Peru.

The exhibits within the Museo de Arte Religioso are extremely varied, with particular highlights including the Peruvian works originating from both the Cusquena School of Art and also the Quitena School of Art. Next to the nave are a couple of additional galleries, where detailed models of the churches of Piura are displayed, being created using silver and gold. Other attractions are also of interest, such as a collection of religious artefacts, a high altar featuring an image of the Virgin of Carmen, detailed reliefs, a marble statue of Christ, and some interesting and rather unexpected information about the history of the El Peruano newspaper.
